Jesus Knew Peter Would Fall Short
Matthew 26:33-35
Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended.
Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.
Isn’t it wonderful that Jesus stays with us, helps us, calls us to higher duties, and advocates for us even though he knows we will fail? Look at the example of Peter's failing. I’m sure Peter believed in his heart and mind, and felt as if he knew for sure, he would never ever leave or deny the Christ. He would never leave Jesus's side. Jesus had given him experiences and opportunities that only he knew, and that had literally made him a new man. His loyalties were strong and un-changeable, and he would defend the Christ to his death. But Jesus knew differently. He knows us all and sees our weakness when we cannot. Like all humans Peter had weaknesses and fears. In a moment or fear, he did exactly what he thought he would never do.
Jesus knew this would happen, but it is wonderful that this did not change how Jesus treated him. He knew what was coming, but he loved Peter, taught him, gave his life for him, and advocating for him with the Father.
We have habits, addictions, weaknesses, fears, pride, envies and other things that can cause us to fall short. The Lord knows this just as he knew it of Peter. Yet he still offers his life and his peace for us. He still advocates for us, and he still asks us to follow him. He will still save us, and he still will love us beyond our comprehension.
